The Aztecs worshipped the gem and named it “quetzalitzlipyollitli” meaning the “stone of the bird of paradise” and to this day it is regarded as Mexico's national gemstone. In Ancient India and Persia, Fire Opal was admired as a symbol of ardent love while the Spanish named it Girasol, which comes from their word for sunflower.
The three main criteria that determine a fire opals price are it's play of colour, body colour and transparency. The more transparency and 'fire' it has, and the more intense the deep red of its body colour, the more valuable it will be. While they can be found in a handful of small deposits around the world, such as Guatemala, Brazil, Canada and Turkey, the rarest, and thus the most highly esteemed, is the intense red-orange fire opals from Mexico
